If your mental map of Bel Air still runs from Main Street to the old enclosed Harford Mall, it is out of date by about a year. The block of Route 24 between Tollgate Road and Baltimore Pike has quietly become the county's busiest food corridor, and this fall is the first full season where residents will feel the change without going looking for it.
The shift did not happen with a ribbon-cutting. It happened one lease at a time, starting in late January and running through spring. Read the openings in order and a pattern shows up: the corridor is no longer coasting on nostalgia for the mall it used to be.
The twelve-month rewrite of the Tollgate corridor
Four openings in the immediate area since January have changed what a weekday lunch or a Saturday breakfast in Bel Air looks like.
- THB Bagelry & Deli opened at the Harford Mall complex on the Tollgate Road corridor on Thursday, January 29th, 2026. The Towson-born shop is the first tenant to arrive under what local coverage has described as a roughly $100 million "de-malling" project at Harford Mall.
- Wonder Bel Air followed on April 9, 2026, at 131 N. Tollgate Road, running daily from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. It is not a food court in the old sense. Wonder houses up to 30 different restaurant concepts under one roof. The Bel Air location allows you to "mix and match" dishes from multiple famous chefs and award-winning restaurants in a single order.
- Burtons Grill & Bar took over the former TGI Fridays. The Liquor Control Board granted tentative approval for a new on-sale license for Burtons Grill of Bel Air on Dec. 10, 2025. The decision notice lists the business entity as Burtons Grill of Bel Air, LLC, and confirms the location as 609 Bel Air Road, with a dining room for 218 guests, an outdoor patio, and a private dining room for special events.
- Raising Cane's opened its first Harford County store last September at 336 Baltimore Pike with a festive grand opening, less than a mile from downtown.
Four openings inside a mile is not a coincidence. It is a leasing thesis. And the thesis has a name.
What Derby Place actually changes, and what it does not yet
Everything above is prologue for Derby Place, the redevelopment of the former Macy's parcel that has been in planning for the better part of six years and finally has a shovel date.
Construction was set to begin in early July, transforming the space into a new mixed-use center called Derby Place. Atlanta-based developer SJC Ventures is purchasing the property from CBL Properties for the project. Derby Place will be anchored by a 35,000-square-foot organic grocer, accompanied by 48,000 square feet for luxury boutiques, restaurants, and shops. The grocer has since been confirmed as Whole Foods, joined by Shake Shack, Eggspectation, and a specialty veterinary tenant. The chain will open its sixth state location in spring 2028, joining previously announced tenants Shake Shack and VEG ER for Pets at the Baltimore Pike and Veterans Memorial Highway site.
The important number for residents is not 2028. It is 249. A residential component also will be at Derby Place with 249 multi-family units and an on-site parking deck. Construction on the residential portion is anticipated to start in fall 2026 by another developer. That is the piece that changes the character of the intersection from "place you drive to" to "place people walk from."
For this fall, though, Derby Place is a construction fence. The interesting story is what is happening on the working side of the property while the fence goes up. As of late May, one outlet counted just seven stores still operating at the enclosed mall, with "no date has been determined" for an official closure. If you have a favorite tenant still holding on inside, this is the season to say goodbye.
Havre de Grace kept its own timetable
Twenty minutes east, the story is quieter but no less specific. The Baltimore Banner reported in January that Harford County will soon have two new spots to up your iron intake, with the arrival of a steakhouse in Havre de Grace from the owners of Geresbeck's Food Market, plus a second branch of John Brown General & Butchery opening in downtown Bel Air. Opening in March in Havre de Grace, steakhouse Butcher on the Bay is an offshoot of Butcher & Bay, a specialty food shop in Kingsville from the owners of Geresbeck's grocery stores.
Two openings in two towns from the same ownership groups tell you something the median dining guide will not: the county's independent food operators are treating Bel Air and Havre de Grace as one market now, not two.
The fall calendar, week by week
The dining shift matters more because the fall calendar is the busiest stretch of the local year. Rather than a generic list, here are the dated anchors worth putting on the fridge, in the order they arrive.

- Bel Air Festival for the Arts, held on September 13, 2026 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM in Shamrock Park. The 2026 edition is the 59th annual Bel Air Festival for the Arts, with up to 300 exhibitors.
- Susquehanna Wine & Seafood Fest, Sat 19 Sep 2026 from 12:00 PM onwards at 701 Concord St.
- Das Bierhalle's 4th Annual Blocktoberfest, same Saturday, Sat 19 Sep 2026 from 10:00 AM onwards at 119 S Main St, Bel Air.
- Evening Beaver Walk at Swan Harbor Farm with the Green Team, September 23 at 6:00 pm, meeting at the end of Clark Road.
October
- Steppingstone Farm Museum Fall Harvest Festival in Havre de Grace, Saturday, October 10th and Sunday, October 11th from 11am to 4pm at 461 Quaker Bottom Road. Admission is $15 for adults, free for members and children 12 & under.
- 3rd Annual Havre de Grace Fall Fest, Sat 17 Oct 2026 from 10:00 AM onwards at Blue Heron Gifts & Boutique.
That is six weekends where the county effectively hosts its own itinerary. If you cannot find something to do between September 13 and October 17, the problem is not the calendar.
The Saturday of September 19 is the tightest scheduling knot of the fall. Susquehanna Wine & Seafood Fest at Tydings Park runs from noon at 701 Concord Street. Blocktoberfest closes off a block of South Main in downtown Bel Air the same morning. Twenty-five minutes of driving separates them. It is genuinely possible to do both.
The quieter fall rituals
The named festivals are the headline. The rhythm of the season is the smaller stuff, and the smaller stuff has held remarkably steady while the corridor has changed around it.
First Fridays on South Main continue at 121 S. Main Street starting at 5 p.m. Bel Air Farmers' Market runs Saturdays from 8 a.m. at 2 South Bond Street, the shady lot behind the courthouse. The Green Team's fall programming, including the World Migratory Bird Day walk that will begin at the parking lot at 8:30 am at the Lock House Museum at 817 Conesteo Street, is free and, in a good year, quietly excellent.
For residents who have watched Boxwood Farms become a September fixture, the greenhouse-and-food-truck combination on the patio is worth the drive again. A recent visitor's write-up on TripAdvisor confirmed the September date will be a Sunflower Festival.
One weekend, mapped
If you want a working itinerary rather than a listicle, here is a plausible one for the Saturday of the Arts Festival, September 13.
Start at THB before 8 a.m. because the line reliably grows by 8:15. Walk the festival at Shamrock Park from opening at 9. Late lunch at Wonder if the group cannot agree on a cuisine, or at Burtons if it can. Detour on the way home through what is left of the enclosed Harford Mall while it is still standing. Cap the evening at Independent Brewing Company or MaGerk's, both a short walk from the festival footprint.
None of this itinerary was fully possible in September 2025. Most of it did not exist in the same form. That is the point of paying attention to a corridor in the middle of a rewrite: the version of Bel Air you use this fall is not the version you used last one.
